Vandals Toss Paint on Lesvos Refugee Shrine; Monument Observed Refugees Who Drowned

A monument set up in memory of the refugees who perished at sea in 2012-2013 as they tried to cross from Turkey to the Greek island of Lesvos was vandalized yesterday by unknown individuals, the Greek Observer website reports today (November 30, 2017).

The monument, which bears the inscribed names of the victims, was splattered with black paint.

A local activist movement called "Movement for the Coexistence and Communication in the Aegean" condemned the incident.

"One wonders what the perpetrator or perpetrators intended by attacking the memory of those people. If anything, they have disregarded universal values and traditions which our ancestors first highlighted, such as respecting the dead, whoever they are," it said in a statement.
