Killer of Egyptian Priest Is Sentenced to Death; Muslim Fanatic Stabbed Orth.Priest with Knife

The man who brutally murdered a Coptic Orthodox priest on the streets of Cairo, Egypt last month has received a preliminary death sentence, The Orthodox Church Info Blog reports today (November 18, 2017).


Mohamed Sonbaty -- a man well-known to police as a violent Muslim fanatic -- was convicted of killing Coptic priest Fr. Samaan Shehata, and the South Giza criminal court issued the preliminary death sentence on November 15.


The court will issue the final verdict on January 15, 2018.


During the trial, Sonbaty admitted he had followed the priest in a car and forced him out; then he attacked and killed him with a knife.
