A military judge ruled today (November 3, 2017) that Bowe Bergdahl, who pleaded guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, should serve no prison time for endangering his comrades by walking off his Afghanistan post, according to the Yahoo News website.
As a presidential candidate, Donald Trump had called for Bergdahl, 31, to face stiff punishment and called him a "traitor."
The judge gave Bergdahl, of Hailey, Idaho, a dishonorable discharge, reduced his rank from sergeant to private, and said he must forfeit pay equal to $1,000 per month for 10 months.
Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of 14 years in prison, citing serious wounds to service members who looked for Bergdahl for five years.
