Russian Orth.Patriarch Travels to Free Romania; 1st Rus.Patriarch to Visit Since Communism End

Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church arrived today (October 26, 2017) in Bucharest on the first visit to Romania by a head of the Russian church since the end of communism in the country in 1989, according to the ABC News website.

NATO and European Union member Romania has cool relations with Russia, as a result of Russia controlling it as a communist satellite for decades after World War II, but the two countries share cultural and religious ties through their Greek Orthodox churches.

Kirill arrived a day ahead of a service celebrating 10 years since Patriarch Daniel was elected head of the Romanian Orthodox church.

Kirill and Daniel will lead tomorrow's service, joined by senior Orthodox bishops from Albania, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
