The parliament of Catalonia voted overwhelmingly today (October 27, 2017) to declare full independence from Spain, a move that was followed by an angry Madrid allowing the government to take over direct rule of the region, according to the UPI website.
By a vote of 70-10, the Catalan Parliament took its first full step toward independence.
The legislation directs the semi-autonomous region to begin a process to formally secede from Spain and to declare itself a republic.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy today asked Madrid's senate for authorization to remove Catalan leader Charles Puigdemont from office, as allowed by Spain's constitution.
