A suspected Islamist knifeman killed two women at the main train station in the French Mediterranean city of Marseille today (October 1, 2017) before being shot dead by soldiers patrolling there, according to the AFP (Agence France-Presse) website.
One of the victims was fatally stabbed while the other had her throat slit by the assailant who shouted "Allahu Akbar" ("God is Greatest") at the start of the rampage.
Soldiers posted in the station to guard vulnerable areas in terror-hit France shot the man dead.
Armed police were deployed afterwards and the grand and ornate rail terminus in the heart of France's second-largest city was evacuated, stopping all train traffic in the region.
