Quebec Province Passes Law Banning Face Veils; Is First Law to Ban Them in All of North America

The Canadian province of Quebec has passed a new law banning face veils -- the first law of its kind in all of North America -- the Euro News website reports today (October 19, 2017).

The new law bars face coverings for people giving or receiving provincial government services. It includes forcing those who use public transportation to unveil.

Critics say it targets Muslim women. The government says the measure protects public safety.

The new ruling is due to take effect in July, 2018.
