IS Defeated in Raqqa after Four-Month Battle; Kurdish Rebel Forces Regain IS Syrian Capital

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said today (October 17, 2017) it has cleared Raqqa -- the Islamic State's de facto Syrian capital -- of all militant fighters, according to the UPI website.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) -- the U.S.-backed rebel force -- said the fierce four-month fight to regain Raqqa ended today with about 300 remaining IS (Islamic State) militant holdouts confined to a narrow section of the city.

IS had held the city for three years and some of its fighters could still be holed up in the city's buildings and tunnels, officials said.

The SDF believes it will take months to clear explosives from the city, which had a population of more than 300,000 before the IS terrorists seized it.
