Court in France Approves Law Banning Full Veil; Amends Law, Will Not Apply to Houses of Worship

The BBC website reports today (October 7, 2010) that France's constitutional court has approved the law that bans wearing the Islamic full veil in public.

The court approved the law almost in its entirety, making one small change: The law will not apply to public places of worship where it may violate religious freedom.

The new law makes it illegal to wear certain garments -- such as the niqab or burka -- which incorporate a full-face veil, anywhere in public.

Under the law, women wearing the full veil in public in France will face a fine of 150 euros.
