COMMENTARY: UN Needs to Act Fast against Islamic Extremist Killings in Pakistan

Islamic extremists in Pakistan killed a Christian lawyer, his wife, and their five children last week. The reason? Because the lawyer filed a lawsuit challenging a Muslim who was charging a Christian an exorbitant interest rate.

Atty Edwin Paul, his wife Ruby Paul, and their five children were shot to death, because Atty. Paul filed a lawsuit. I find it hard to believe that anyone -- let alone seven people -- would be killed for such a petty reason.

Apparently, the Islamic extremists had another reason for their killings; namely, their hatred of Christians. The day before the murders, a neighbor heard one extremist say, "We will not allow even a single Christian to live here" (in northern Pakistan).

This kind of barbaric and homicidal behavior in Pakistan -- which has existed there for some time now -- needs to end quickly. To add fuel to the fire, many Pakistanis who kill Christians are not even prosecuted for murder in Pakistani courts.

On the other hand, if a Christian killed a Muslim in Pakistan, he would be tried to the full extent of the law, and be severely punished. Indeed, Pakistan has a double standard in its justice system.

Consequently, it is time for the United Nations to scrutinize this mistreatment of Christians in Pakistan and to take punitive action against it.

Perhaps the UN could impose economic sanctions against Pakistan -- or implement another punitive action -- for that nation's inhumane treatment of Christians.

In any event, the UN needs to look into this Pakistani barbarism as soon as it can. Enough of innocent Christians -- in fact, too many of them -- have already been murdered in Pakistan, primarily because they are Christians instead of Muslims.
