Ukrainian Comedian Elected Nation's President; Volodymyr Zelensky Overtakes Petro Poroshenko

Fed up with the status quo that has pervaded the country for the past few years, Ukrainians today (April 21, 2019) elected a Ukrainian comedian, who plays a fictional president in a popular TV show, as the country's next president after a national exit poll showed Volodymyr Zelensky winning a landslide victory in the presidential race, according to the Euro News website.

Zelensky, who has no previous experience in politics and is Jewish, has won 73% of the vote, surpassing his rival, incumbent Petro Poroshenko, who won just 25% of the vote.

Poroshenko has admitted defeat, and said he would step down as president this month, but planned to remain in politics.

Zelensky told a crowd of supporters today "we did it together... I just want to say thank you."
