Huge Fire Engulfs Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral; Blaze Could Be Linked to Ongoing Renovations

A huge fire swept through the roof of the famed Notre-Dame Cathedral in central Paris today (April 15, 2019) sending flames and huge clouds of grey smoke billowing into the sky, according to the AFP (Agence France-Presse) website.

The flames and smoke plumed from the spire and roof of the gothic cathedral, visited by millions of people each year. Later, the flames caused the spire to collapse.

A spokesman for the cathedral said the wooden structure supporting the roof was being gutted by the blaze. The fire is believed to have begun in the cathedral attic.

The fire service said the blaze could be "potentially linked" to ongoing renovations at the cathedral.
