The U.S. came under sharp criticism from the 14 other UN Security Council nations yesterday for recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights earlier this week, in violation of council resolutions, the Times of Israel website reports today (March 28, 2019).
Speaker after speaker supported Syria's sovereignty of the Golan Heights and opposed President Donald Trump's proclamation of Israeli sovereignty of the territory.
As South Africa's UN Ambassador Jerry Matjila said, "This unilateral action does nothing to assist in finding a long-term peaceful solution to the conflict in the Middle East."
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it as part of Israel in 1981.
