A crucifix that has been affixed to the wall in the city council chambers in Montreal, Canada for over 80 years will be taken down to "reaffirm" the "secular character" of the government building, the Christian Post website reports today (March 27, 2019),
The crucifix, which features a sculpture of Jesus, has hung on the wall of the Montreal City Council since 1937.
It was stationed there as a reminder to politicians to ensure their decisions are guided by God.
But city councilman Laurence Lavigne-Lalonde said, "The crucifix was installed during an era that was completely different than the one we live in today. We now live in a society ... that must be secular, neutral, and open to all citizens."
