Montenegro Church Shows Fresco of Tito in Hell; Due to a Power Conflict with Serbian Orth.Church

A Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro has painted a likeness of the speaker of parliament in a scene of sinners in hell, along with Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and former Yugoslav communist  leader Josip Broz Tito, the Balkan Insight website reports today (February 1, 2014).

The Church of the Resurrection in the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica said all of them belonged in hell as "church haters."

Representatives of the Church said this week that speaker Ranko Krivokapic merited his own position in the painting as a result of his "failed attempts at persecution" of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro.

Conflict between the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Montenegrin Orthodox Church has existed for several years, since Montenegro claims its Orthodox Church is autonomous, while Serbia claims it comes under Serbia's jurisdiction. Montenegro had been a part of Serbia, but became an independent republic in 1992, after the breakup of Yugoslavia into several smaller nations.
