Turkey's Erdogan Tells Women Have 4 or 5 Kids; As a Way to Enhance Turkey's Grandeur, Ec. Dev.

Turkey's Islamic populist Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Turkish women to have "at least four or five children" in the name of the country's "grandeur" and faster economic growth, the Hurriyet Daily News (Turkish) website reports today (January 22, 2013).

Erdogan and his wife Emine have four children.

Having a large family, he explained, "is of great importance for the future of our nation."

Today, Turkey has a population of 75 million, which is expected to grow to 100 million by 2025. The country is trying to become one of the top ten economic powers of the world. Currently, it is 17th.
