It emerged in Rome yesterday that Pope John Paul II will be declared a saint by 2014, the Austrian Times website reports today (January 11, 2013).
Vatican officials are said to be undertaking checks on a series of miracles put forward by the Polish-born pope's supporters as evidence of his holiness.
Pope John Paul II has been credited with several miracles -- not just one, which is required for becoming a saint -- according to the Vatican officials.
"Canonization should be fast. If it isn't done in 2013, John Paul II will be announced saint in 2014," said Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, a close friend of the pope, and prefect emeritus of the Vatican Congregation of Bishops.
