Just one week before the general elections in Israel, several Israeli Likkud Party officials today (January 16, 2013) accused U.S. President Barack Obama of meddling and "gross interference," according to the Big News Network website.
Obama recently accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu -- who is up for re-election next week -- of leading Israel "down the path toward near isolation," according to a columnist for the Jerusalem Post. The columnist also wrote that Obama viewed Netanyahu as a "political coward," unwilling to lead or spend political capital to advance the cause of compromise.
Although the U.S. remains Israel's closest ally, Obama and Netanyahu have often "locked horns" and maintained opposing views on several issues, including Netanyahu's recent decision to build several hundred settlements in Palestinian-claimed land in the West Bank.
Last month, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel -- who is Jewish and served as Obama's Chief of Staff -- also had some harsh words for Netanyahu, accusing him of rejecting Obama's stand by announcing a new settlement expansion in the West Bank. Emanuel also said that Netanyahu was ungrateful and "repeatedly betrayed" Obama with his arrogance, given Obama's unconditional support for Israel and supplying Israel with its most modern weapons.
