The Washington National Cathedral -- one of the highest-profile churches in the United States -- will be hosting same-sex weddings soon, a cathedral leader said today (January 9, 2013), according to the BBC website.
The Very Rev. Gary Hall said the move brings about "the full participation" of gay people in the church.
The National Cathedral has no official state sanction, but has hosted presidential inaugural services and state funerals, and welcomed foreign heads of state.
Gay marriage is legal in the District of Columbia and nine U.S. states. Dean Hall said the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, D.C. was "a leader in the implementation of marriage equality."
