UN Votes US Recognition of Israel Null and Void; Bars Recognition 128 to 9 Despite Trump Threat

In a humiliating blow for Donald Trump on the world stage, the United Nations General Assembly today (December 21, 2017) voted by 128 to 9 to declare his controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital "null and void," according to the Independent (British) website.

Just days after the U.S. used its veto power at the UN Security Council to block  a similar measure, the general assembly condemned America's unilateral action, that most observers believe hampers efforts to secure peace in the Middle East.

While the vote has little practical impact -- it is not legally binding -- its is a significant embarrassment for the U.S., since it reflects global opinion.

Thirty-five countries -- mostly from Africa and Latin America -- abstained from the vote. The large number of abstentions is likely a result of the Trump administration's threat to "take names" of countries that do not vote in favor of the U.S., and to cut billions of dollars in U.S. foreign aid to these nations.
