Erdogan Could Cut Israel Ties over Jerusalem; Islam Leader Angry at Trump's Jerusalem Plan

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said today (December 5, 2017) that Turkey could break off diplomatic relations with Israel if the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital, according to the Jerusalem Post website.

Erdogan is one of several Muslim leaders to warn of negative implications of the move. Tel Aviv has been the capital of Israel since Israel became an independent nation in 1948.

The likelihood that Trump may make an announcement on the move as early as tomorrow has also stirred some opposition from U.S. officials who fear it could unleash violence.

Such a decision would oppose decades of U.S. policy to take a stance on the fate of Jerusalem on the grounds that this was an issue Israelis and Palestinians should negotiate and decide.
