Trump Recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's Capital; Historic "New Approach" to Middle East Peace

President Donald Trump today (December 6, 2017) recognized the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel's capital -- a historical decision that overturns decades of U.S. policy and risks triggering a fresh spasm of violence in the Middle East -- according to the AFP (Agence France-Presse) website.

"I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," Trump said from the White House.

Trump has also decided to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Although Jerusalem is claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians, Trump said his decision marked the start of a "new approach" to solving the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
