Putin Vows to Help Syria Rebuild Its Churches; Says Syrian Battles Waning,Many Return Home

Russia will help rebuild Christian churches in Syria and establish peace in historically Christian regions of the war-torn country, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed during a meeting this week with representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Worthy News website reports today (December 6, 2017).

Putin told the meeting's attendees: "It's very important that the peaceful life is established as soon as possible, that people can return to their homes; to rebuild the temples and churches."

During the meeting, Putin also stressed that the civil war in Syria is winding down and much of the territory -- including Christian areas -- has been liberated.

Russia has been a strong ally of the Syrian government in fighting its rebels and Islamic State (IS) troops. The Greek Orthodox Church is the predominant Christian church in both Russia and Syria.
