EU May Take Unprecedented Action on Poland; Due to Poland's Judiciary Controlled by Politics

The European Union's executive commission will likely decide this week to trigger an unprecedented procedure against Poland that could move the country closer to losing its voting rights in the 28-nation bloc, the LA Times website reports today (December 17, 2017).

The move would involve a formal warning to Poland that it sees a "clear risk of a serious breach" of European values in new bills that overhaul its judicial system. The leaders of Germany and France said they would back the commission if it decides to take this step against Poland.

Poland's new Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki tried -- but failed -- to persuade leaders at an EU summit in Brussels on December 15 that the new judiciary rules do not violate democratic values.

Jurisprudence scholars believe that laws recently passed by Poland destroy the independence of its judicial branch of government by putting it under political control of the ruling party.
