Romney's Israeli Superiority View Called Racist; Angers Palestinians Who Say It Promotes Hatred

The Big News Network website reports today (July 31, 2012) that Mitt Romney -- the U.S. Republican presidential contender -- is being accused of racism, after he said that the Israelis were richer than Palestinians because of their cultural and religious superiority.

Romney said that Israel was more prosperous than the Palestinian territories because of its culture and the "hand of Providence," seen by many Palestinians as a reference to God.

While visiting Israel earlier this week, Romney said, "As I come here and I look out over this city (Jerusalem)  and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things."

Regarding Romney's statements, Saeb Erekat -- the veteran Palestinian negotiator with close ties with the United States -- said, "What this man is doing here is just promoting extremism, violence, and hatred, and this is absolutely unacceptable."
