NYC Man Sentenced to Prison for Selling Kidneys; Levy Rosenbaum Made Millions from Recipients

The Fox News website reports today (July 12, 2012) that a New York City man was sentenced in Trenton (NJ) federal court yesterday to two and a half years in prison, in a case that is the first ever federal conviction for illegally selling human kidneys for profit.

Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, 61, a Brooklyn resident, pleaded guilty last October to brokering three illegal kidney transplants for New Jersey-based customers in exchange for payments of $120,000 or more.

Prosecutors say Rosenbaum -- an Orthodox Jew -- made millions of dollars by exploiting desperate recipients and paying donors a petty sum.

In court yesterday, Rosenbaum admitted wrongdoing, but said his motives were "altruistic."
