On July 11, 2012, a Brooklyn resident was sentenced in Trenton (NJ) federal court to two and a half years in prison for illegally selling human kidneys for profit.
Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, 61, pleaded guilty to brokering illegal kidney transplants for New Jersey customers in exchange for payments of $120,000 or more for each kidney.
Prosecutors said Rosenbaum made millions by exploiting desperate recipients and paying donors very little for their kidneys.
We believe that Rosenbaum deserved the two-and-a-half-year prison sentence he received for his inhumane and illegal profitable ploy. In fact, we believe that his prison sentence should have been at least five years.
To make money by illegally selling kidneys -- or any other part of the human body for that matter -- is one of the most disgusting and inhumane things a person can do to his fellow man in our civilized society.
The fact that Rosenbaum is an Orthodox Jew -- which is considered to be the most sacred of all types of Jews -- makes this situation even more incredible.
One would have expected Rosenbaum to place God before gold, but he obviously did just the opposite. This case marks the first time in American history in which a person has been convicted for selling human kidneys for profit; hopefully, it will also be the last time.
This situation reminds us of Judas Iscariot, and his betrayal of Christ nearly 2,000 years ago for 30 pieces of silver. Indeed -- because of his obsessive desire for money -- Rosenbaum can be viewed as a "modern-day Judas" by doing whatever he needs to do to receive money.
When will man ever learn to place his love for God and human beings ahead of his own selfish greed for money?
