Israel's Ultra-Orthodox Jews Protest Draft Plans; Israel May Start Drafting Ultra-Orthodox in Aug.

The Huffington Post website reports today (July 17, 2012) that thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews protested yesterday in Jerusalem against attempts to draft members of the cloistered community into the Israeli military.

The current law exempts ultra-Orthodox Jews from military service. That infuriates many Israelis, since all other Jews are required to serve.

Israel's Supreme Court recently ruled the law must be revised, and set an August 1 deadline for approval of  a law requiring ultra-Orthodox Jews to serve in the military.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews fear assimilation in the secular military, and claim they are serving the state of Israel by serving God in prayer and study. Some have even asserted that they will go to jail, rather than serve in the military.
