Poll: 1 in 5 Americans Won't Vote for a Mormon; 43% of Americans Don't Know Romney Is Mormon

The Slate website reports today (June 21, 2012) that a new Gallup poll shows that nearly 1 in 5 (18 percent) Americans say they would not vote for a qualified presidential candidate who happens to be a Mormon.

However, voters' tolerance towards Mormons has increased from the 22 percent opposition last year, and an all-time high of 24 percent in 2007 -- the year Mitt Romney first announced his bid for the White House.

The good news for Romney is that voters can only hold his faith against him if they know about it and -- at least currently -- that's not the case for 43 percent of Americans.

Thirty-three percent said they didn't know the GOP candidate's religion, while the other 10 percent was split among those who misidentified him as a Protestant, Catholic, or "other."

  1. I think it is ridiculous that respondents in this poll mentioned that they wouldn't consider voting for a Mormon...That seems like a very blanketed statement for Americans who supposedly believe in freedom of religion.
