Canada's Cath. Bishops Seek Respect for Religion; Say Govt. Tends to Be Indifferent on Rel. Matters

The National Catholic Register website reports today (June 1, 2012) that Canada's Catholic bishops have called on the country to recover its respect for freedom of religion and conscience -- greatly battered in recent years by government policies and judicial rulings that treat religion as a private matter people should keep to themselves.

In a May 14 pastoral letter, Canada's bishops affirmed freedom of religion and conscience is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of democracy.

The pastoral letter makes reference to recent regulatory decisions that force marriage commissioners to marry homosexuals, doctors to make referrals to abortions, and pharmacists to sell abortifacients -- or quit.

Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton, Alberta said the letter was not prompted by religious persecution as much as it was by a general attitude dismissing religion in the sphere of public affairs.
