Hasidic Jew Fired from NYPD Over Beard Length; Fishel Litzman Says God Forbids Him to Cut It

An Orthodox Jew -- who was just weeks away from becoming a New York City police officer -- said he has been kicked out of the police academy for refusing to trim his beard, the Associated Press website reports today (June 9, 2012).

Former recruit Fishel Litzman of Monsey, New York was fired yesterday, after multiple confrontations with the department over the length of his whiskers.

Litzman is Hasidic and believes that cutting his beard is forbidden by God.

New York Police Department (NYPD) rules usually require officers to be clean-shaven. The NYPD does make exceptions for beards kept for religious purposes, but even then only allows one millimeter worth of growth.
