Texas Defunds Planned Parenthood, Abortions; Joins IN, KS, NJ, and NC in Ending Its Funding

The Life Site News website reports today (July 22, 2011) that Texas governor Rick Perry -- who is a 2012 Republican presidential contender -- has signed a measure defunding Planned Parenthood in the Lone Star state, thus making it the largest state to deprive the abortion organization of taxpayer funds.

Perry on July 20 signed SB 7, which excludes abortion providers and their affiliates from the Medicaid Women's Health Program, and also places Planned Parenthood at the bottom of the list of eligible recipients of family planning funds.

SB 7 also prevents hospital districts from using local tax funding for abortions.

Perry's signature places Texas among several other states -- including Indiana, Kansas, New Jersey, and North Carolina -- that have deprived Planned Parenthood of funding in its state budget this year.
