Cardinal Retracts His Position on Women Priests; Now Agrees RC Church Can Never Ordain Women

The Catholic Culture website reports today (July 10, 2011) that the Portuguese cardinal -- who made headlines recently by saying that there is no major obstacle to the ordination of women -- has reversed his public stand, acknowledging that the Roman Catholic Church can never ordain women.

Cardinal Jose da Cruz Policarpo of Lisbon said that after making his earlier statement in answer to a reporter's question, he realized that he spoke prematurely.

He emphasized that he had not intended to suggest a dissent from papal teaching.

Pope John Paul II -- in his 1994 apostolic letter "Ordinatio Sacerdotalis" -- said that the Church cannot ordain women.
