Buddhism in US Grows Due to Influx of Asians; Buddhist Teachings Now Adapting to US Culture

The Voice of America website reports today (July 10, 2011) that American Buddhism -- which is growing because of the influx of Asian immigrants -- is now adapting to Western ways.

Boys aged 5 to 14 have their heads shaved as they start a five-day retreat. This provides them with an introduction to Buddhist teaching, and offers a brief taste of the life of a monk.

Kusala Bhikshu -- an American-born priest at the International Buddhist Meditation Center in Los Angeles -- said Buddhism has a history of more than 100 years in the United States.

Bhikshu added, "And it now has dug its roots into the soil of America, so there are people born in America who are becoming ordained as Buddhist monks or nuns, and bringing Buddhist teachings to everyday Americans."
