CUA Being Sued for Reinstating Same-Sex Dorms; Lawyer: Same-Sex Dorms Violate Human Rights

The Fox News website reports today (July 18, 2011) that Catholic University of America (CUA) President John Garvey is being sued for requiring all CUA dormitories to be single-sex.

Starting this fall, CUA -- which had some coed dorms last academic year -- will reinstate an old policy of all gender-segregated dorms.

Garvey has stressed the need to return to Catholic values, saying the change would work to reduce binge drinking and promiscuous sex.

John Banzhaf -- the lawyer who is suing CUA -- maintains that Garvey's decision was not motivated by Catholic values, but was purely for secular reasons. He also claims the switch back to only same-sex dorms violates students' human rights.
