AWOL Soldier's Plan to Attack Fort Hood Foiled; Store Clerk Warned Police of Ammo He Purchased

An AWOL (absent without official leave) soldier -- caught with weapons and a bomb inside a backpack -- admitted planning what would have been Fort Hood's second terrorist attack in less than two years, the Associated Press website reports today (July 28, 2011).

He might have succeeded at carrying it out, if a gun-store clerk -- who became suspicious due to the huge amount of ammunition he had purchased -- had not alerted police, Killeen (Texas) Police Chief Dennis Baldwin said.

The 21-year-old suspect, PFC Naser Abdo, a Muslim, was arrested yesterday at a motel about three miles from Fort Hood's main entrance.

He went AWOL from Fort Campbell, Kentucky during the July 4 weekend.
