Patriarch Kirill Goes to Kiev (Russia's Old Capital); Will Celebrate Adoption of Christianity in Russia

The Religious Information Service of Ukraine website reports that Patriarch Kirril of Moscow and All Russia arrived in Kiev, Ukraine today (July 26, 2011) to mark the adoption of Christianity in Kievan Russia on July 28.

On July 27, Patriarch Kirill will conduct a festive service at Volodymyr -- where a monument of Prince Volodymyr stands -- and then chair a meeting of the Holy Synod.

On July 28 -- the day that marks the adoption of Christianity in Russia and commemorates Saint Prince Vladimir -- Patriarch Kirill will lead a divine service at the Cathedral Square of the Monastery of the Caves.

Kiev -- the capital of modern Ukraine -- was the capital of medieval Russia, whose leader Prince Volodymyr adopted Christianity as its official religion in 988. Kiev was replaced by Moscow as the capital of Russia in the 13th century.
