Russian President Vladimir Putin announced today (December 29, 2016) that Syria's government and opposition groups have agreed to a nationwide ceasefire and are ready to hold peace talks, raising hopes of an imminent peaceful settlement of a six-year war that has left a half million people dead and 11 million displaced, according to the Vice News website.
Syria's military and the Turkish foreign ministry also confirmed today that the agreement -- brokered by Russia, Turkey, and Iran -- was designed to pursue a political solution to Syria's war.
The deal -- which excludes jihadi groups such as IS (Islamic State) -- will go into effect tonight at midnight.
If the ceasefire holds, peace talks between Syria's government and the opposition will be held in mid-January in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
