The Human Rights Watch group said today (November 3, 2016) that many women and girls who had survived the violence and sexual abuse of the Nigerian Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram, have been raped by government officials in northern Nigeria where they sought safety, according to the CNN website.
Dozens of women and girls who stayed at camps for the displaced in Borno State's capital, Maiduguri, told Human Rights Watch (HRW) they were sexually abused or coerced into sex by camp leaders, vigilante group members, policemen, and soldiers.
Several women were abandoned after they became pregnant.
Mausi Segun, senior Nigeria researcher at HRW, said, "It is disgraceful and outrageous that people who should protect these women and girls are attacking and abusing them."
