The Obama administration blasted Israel's plan to build 300 units deep inside the West Bank as a betrayal of U.S. friendship and of Shimon Peres' legacy, the JTA (Jewish Telegraphic Agency) website reports today (October 6, 2016).
The statement yesterday by Mark Toner -- the Deputy State Department spokesman -- was unusually lengthy, harsh, and emotional in tone.
Toner cited a $38 billion defense assistance agreement with Israel reached last month -- the largest Israel has ever received from the United States -- and President Barack Obama's eulogy last week at the funeral for the late Israeli peace-loving president and prime minister, Shimon Peres.
"It is deeply troubling, in the wake of Israel and U.S. concluding an unprecedented agreement on military assistance designed to further strengthen Israel's security, that Israel would take a decision so contrary to its long-term security interest in a peaceful resolution of its conflict with the Palestinians," Toner said.
