Russia warned the U.S. today (October 6, 2016) not to intervene militarily in Syria against forces loyal to President Basher al-Assad, threatening that it would down aircraft attempting to launch strikes, the Yahoo News website reports.
In a bluntly worded statement, a spokesman for Russia's defense ministry warned that Russia and the Syrian government had deployed sufficient air defenses to block any potential attacks.
The warning follows a Washington Post report earlier this week that the Pentagon was presenting the Obama administration with the option of strikes on Syrian government forces.
Besides air strikes, the United States is now considering providing rebels inside Syria with heavier weaponry, such as tanks and howitzers.
