Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres is about to officially become the next Secretary General of the United Nations, the Euro News website reports today (October 6, 2016).
The UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution today formally recommending him to the organization's 193-member General Assembly for election as the next leader of the world peace body.
The General Assembly will hold a vote to officially invest Guterres as Secretary General in the coming days.
Guterres served as prime minister of Portugal in its socialist party from 1995 to 2002, and as UN High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015. He succeeds Ban Ki.moon, whose term as UN Secretary General ends in December, 2016.
