Lightning struck the Bethany Congregational Church in Quincy, Massachusetts on Sunday, September 1, shortly after services began, the Drudge Report website reports today (September 2, 2013).
Everyone inside heard a loud noise when a bolt hit the steeple. The blast sent some debris from the roof crashing down to the pavement outside.
The pastor -- who served a tour in Iraq -- said it reminded him of a bomb. "I was more concerned about the people here in the church and what they were going through. It shocked a lot of them," Pastor Bill Harding said.
The church quickly canceled the morning service because of concerns that two pieces of concrete from the damaged steeple could fall through the roof. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
