The Pentagon announced today (September 9, 2020) it will reduce its presence in Iraq from 5,200 to 3,000 troops this month, according to the RT website.
The withdrawal illustrates Baghdad's progress in building its own forces.
The U.S. recognizes "the great progress the Iraqi forces have made," Marine General Frank McKenzie, the head of U.S. Central Command, said in a recent visit to Iraq.
The drawdown in Iraq is likely to be confirmed soon by Donald Trump, along with a similar drawdown in Afghanistan.
