Pope Francis introduced a major change in Catholic law yesterday, which requires all priests and nuns to report incidents of sex abuse and attempts to cover them up, the UPI website reports today (May 9, 2019).
The new procedures will take effect June 1 and will be re-evaluated after three years, the Vatican said.
"The crimes of sexual abuse offend Our Lord, cause physical, psychological and spiritual damage to the victims, and harm the community of the faithful," the pope said.
He added, "In order that these phenomena, in all their forms, never happen again, a continuous and profound conversion of hearts is needed, attested by concrete and effective actions that involve everyone in the church..."
