Bartholomew Forces Abp. Demetrios to Resign; May Be Due to Millions of Stolen St. Nicholas $$

Archbishop Demetrios of America today (May 4, 2019) submitted his resignation to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew during a visit to Istanbul, the Ekathimerini (Greek Daily) website reports.

Demetrios stepped down on the second day of his visit, during which he informed Bartholomew about the current affairs of the Archdiocese of America, including steps to improve its finances following financial mismanagement in the reconstruction of the St. Nicholas Shrine at the World Trade Center in New York, which was destroyed in the 9/11/2001 terrorist attack.

The financial mismanagement involved the "disappearance" of several million dollars that should have been used to help rebuild the Saint Nicholas Shrine.

Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, had twice called on the 90-year-old Demetrios to resign, but the latter resisted. Today, Bartholomew refused to grant Demetrios an extension of his position. Demetrios was born in Thessaloniki, Greece on February 1, 1928, and became Archbishop in 1999.
