Pope Francis made his first visit to Romania today (May 31, 2019), aiming to mend ties with the Greek Orthodox Church, meet with Romanian leaders, and visit medieval sites, according to the UPI website.
Francis was greeted with a large crowd of leaders, Catholics, and children when he arrived in Bucharest, Romania's capital.
"It is a great pleasure to have you here, on Romanian soil," Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said.
Francis gave a speech after meeting with Iohannis at the Cotroceni Palace on the strides Romania -- a predominantly Orthodox Christian country -- has made since the fall of communism in 1989.
