Georgia Bans Abortion after Heartbeat Detected; Is Fourth State This Year to Pass a Heartbeat Law

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed a bill into law yesterday that bans abortion once a fetal heartbeat has been detected and recognizes fetuses as natural persons, the Christian Post website reports today (May 8, 2019).

"Georgia is a state that values life," Kemp said as he signed The Living Infants Fairness and Equality Act, into law.

The move drew support from pro-life supporters such as Live Action founder and President Lila Rose. Georgia is the fourth state this year to pass a heartbeat bill, joining Kentucky, Mississippi , and Ohio.

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D.-N.Y., lashed out at the legislation yesterday, calling it a "backdoor ban" on abortion.
