In a victory battle that is certain to enhance the morale of American and Afghan troops, Afghan security forces -- backed by U.S. military advisers and air power -- have evicted Taliban insurgents from a strategically southern district, the VOA News website reports today (July 17, 2017).
The Afghan forces entered Nawa district in southern Helmand province early today and established government control over it.
U.S. airstrikes overnight against three Taliban bases in the area killed more than 20 insurgents, allowing Afghan forces to retake control of the area.
A search and cleaning operation is now underway in the district where insurgents have heavily mined areas around key installations.
