A Kentucky county clerk who had been jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples secretly met Pope Francis -- a move that disappointed many liberal Catholics and encouraged people who support her stance -- the Reuters website reports today (September 30, 2015).
An attorney for Davis revealed last night that Davis and her husband had a secret meeting with Francis in the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C. on September 24, and Francis told the defiant county clerk to "stay strong."
Many liberal Catholics and gay supporters have been critical of the pope for meeting with Davis.
Also, the revelation of the secret meeting by Davis's attorney -- five days after it occurred -- conveys that Pope Francis, who has brought a plethora of Catholic "dropouts" back to the Catholic Church because of his down-to-earth views on religious issues (as opposed to rigid Catholic doctrine), may indeed indicate that the pope has a "sneaky side." The fact that the pope on his flight back to Rome told reporters that he supports Davis's conscientious objection as an innate human right -- while not telling them that he secretly met with her -- clearly portrays his insincerity, and this failure to tell the whole truth must not be ignored.
